Ed’s joint appointment between the School of Arts, Media and Engineering and the Department of English reflects his interest in digital narratives, contemporary culture and the intersection of the humanities, arts and sciences. Previously he worked as a University Innovation Fellow in the Office of University Initiatives, where he advanced the New American University ideal and developed proposals for new transdisciplinary programs.
He completed his doctoral degree in English and American literature at Stanford University in 2011, where his dissertation, “The Social Lives of Books,” explored the changing nature of reading in the digital era. Before graduate school Ed worked as a journalist at Time, Slate and Popular Science. He earned his bachelor's degree at Princeton University with a Comparative Literature major and certificates in Computer Science, Creative Writing and European Cultural Studies.
