Jonny Hankins of the Bassetti Foundation posted a blog about the first annual meeting of the Virtual Institute for Responsible Innovation (VIRI), held 14 – 16 July, 2015, in Sussex, UK. 

VIRI Member David Guston (CNS-ASU) is founding director of the new School for the Future of Innovation in Society at ASU. The school will teach students how to look at innovation from an anticipatory perspective. 

CNS-ASU Director Dave Guston, along with ASU Barrett Honors College Faculty Fellow Jenny Dyck Brian and Caltech Professor Richard Murray, hosted a workshop in Tempe, AZ, on Research Agendas in the Societal Aspects of Synthetic Biology. 

CNS-ASU, in collaboration with engineering researchers, industry, and government, has developed a new anticipatory approach to Life Cycle Assessments (aLCA) and applied it to photovoltaics research. The research and unique collaboration landed CNS Fellow Ben Wender and 14 co-authors top billing in the September 16 issue of the peer-reviewed journal Environmental Science and Technology. 

Improved social and emotional intelligence can help scientists and engineers connect to a broader public and better tailor their research and innovation to benefit society. CNS-ASU Fellow Kaitlin Vortherms is researching the role of empathy in engineering, as well as practical approaches to increasing empathic capacity in engineers.
