National Science Foundation Ramps Up Studies of Nanotechnology's Social
Implications: The National Science Foundation
awarded grants last week to finance a network of academic researchers who
will study the social implications of nanotechnology, like environmental
risks and threats to privacy. The awards represent a significant increase
in federal funds for an area that some argue has been under-studied.

New Grants Are Awarded to
Inform the Public and Explore the Implications of Nanotechnology:
NSF has selected
the University of California, Santa Barbara, and Arizona State University
in Tempe, Ariz., to create two new Centers for Nanotechnology in Society.
These centers will support research and education on nanotechnology and
social change, as well as educational and public outreach activities, and
international collaborations.
