Prior to joining UW in 2004, he was a tenured Associate Professor and

University. He teaches courses in Research and Strategy, Research Methods,

Much of Scheufele's research examines media influences on political
participation and civic engagement - both offline and online. He is
especially interested in how deliberative exchanges among citizens can
moderate or strengthen these effects.
Scheufele's second area of specialization is public opinion and public
opinion polling. Much of his recent research in this area has examined the
factors shaping public attitudes toward science and technology. This
includes a number of studies tapping the public opinion dynamics and media
coverage surrounding nanotechnology, stem cell research, GMOs, and related
issues. This work has been supported by competitive research grants from
the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the
Worldwide University Network, and other funding agencies.
In 2004, Scheufele won the Young Scholar Award for outstanding early
career research from the International Communication Association. He is
also a recipient of the Young Faculty Teaching Excellence Award from the
College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell University, and
a recipient of various other research and teaching awards from the Association for
Education in Journalism & Mass Communication, the Midwest Association for
Public Opinion Research, and the World Association for Public Opinion
Research. He is also a past DAAD fellow.
Scheufele is President of the Midwest Association for Public Opinion
Research and past Head of AEJMC's Communication Theory & Methodology
Division. From 2001 to 2004 he was journal review editor for the
International Journal of Public Opinion Research, and he currently serves
on the editorial boards of Communication Studies (beginning 2007),
the International Journal of Public Opinion Research, Journal of
Communication, and Mass Communication & Society.
Scheufele's professional experience includes consulting work for major
marketing firms, such as Fallon Worldwide, as well as numerous
public-sector clients, including the Public Broadcasting System (PBS), the
World Health Organization (WHO), and the Emirates Center for Strategic
Study and Research in the United Arab Emirates.
