Marilyn Carlson
Co-PI, Center for Nanotechnology in Society
Professor of Mathematics
Marilyn Carlson completed her Ph.D. in Mathematics Education from
the University of Kansas in 1995. She came to ASU that same year and
served as Director of the First Year Mathematics Department. Dr. Carlson
conducts research investigating what is involved in knowing and learning
undergraduate mathematics. She is currently investigating how students
acquire an understanding of the function concept, and its implications for
undergraduate curriculum design. In addition, she is conducting research
investigating the development of students’ mathematical thinking and
problem solving abilities, and is initiating investigations into how
students acquire theorem proving abilities.
